Teacher Biography

Benjamin Dow

In my career I’ve taught all grades 8-12 and more types of classes than I can remember.  I have been fortunate to teach in American schools around the world. My wife and I spent four years teaching at the American International School of Guangzhou in southern China where our kids were born (and to answer your interesting sociological question before you ask: no, that does not make them Chinese citizens). Before that, we spent two years teaching at Lincoln Community School in Accra, Ghana.  I've also spent many years in variety of public and private schools here in the U.S from the large 2000+ to the small 40+, and a variety of teaching environments from small seminars and team-teaching, to AP and IB courses.

As a social studies teacher, my international experience allows me to lend students first-person insight and guidance in navigating the global issues and relationships that are essential for all people in the world today to understand.  Ultimately, I believe that, more than knowledge, the critical thinking & communication skills I help students hone in my classroom are the essential elements of 21st-century education. Hopefully, students leave my classroom ready to engage in the world, change it, and make it a better place for us all. Here's a slightly embarrassing video we did for the NEA where I say all of that.

My classes, curriculum and thoughts on education have been featured in Teaching Tolerance and Kids Can Make a Difference magazines as well as Teacher Voices. As well as my annual graduation Senior Class Poems!
